Massage is used with those with multiple sclerosis for several benefits.

First and foremost back pain can be extremely debilitating from a loss of core strength that is often commonly associated with MS. This can help relax overactive muscles that are working hard to aid with linear extension (standing tall).

Muscle spasms, altered sensation and pain are also commonly associated with MS. The repetitive sensory feedback and increase in muscle length can help reduce these and thereby improve your quality of life. It can also increase your body schema which is your own ability to know where your own body is.

Muscle shortening due to reduced mobility or spasms can be severely debilitating with MS. Passive stretches to tight muscle groups can help improve muscle function and thereby increase mobility.

With regards to chronic pain associated with MS, massage increases your body's production of serotonin which is a natural painkiller. In addition massage promotes circulation and boosts relaxation.

Last and foremost, constipation which is often a subject many do not wish to discuss is an extremely uncomfortable to those with MS. Massage therapy stimulates gut mobility and has shown effectiveness as a treatment for constipation
